DEVILS
OF THE ALPINE
Field Monitoring Tour
The DEVILS
OF THE ALPINE - Field Monitoring Program has
been operating for about 18 months and has provided us with valuable information
and a greater understanding of the current devil population in the area, this
research may assist in the survival of the Tasmanian devil in the spectacular
World Heritage wilderness area of Cradle Mountain.
NEW TOUR
Every Friday a unique opportunity exists for a small number of people to join a wild devil field research tour.
At the completion of the 'Night feeding Tour', the small group will embark on a short spotlighting walk in search of wild Tasmanian devils, we visit different research sites which contain various bait stations that attract devils, while also looking for evidence such as foot prints and scats. Each site is constantly monitored with infra - red digital camera technology, the camera cards are removed while on tour and taken back to the facility for the weekly inspection and recording. You will also have the opportunity to view other native species during the walk such as quoll, wombat, wallaby and possum.

Once back at the facility the Field Monitoring Program will be
presented in greater detail and the photographs from the cameras displayed on
a projector screen. The group will work through the process of identification
and recording of body markings, age, sex, condition, presence of DFTD and so
on. This will allow you to contribute to an important conservation program,
hear about what our research has revealed so far and what the intentions are
for this program.
